Carson's 6th Birthday

Carson's birthday was a week-long celebration. It began the morning of his actual birthday, when he got to open presents from mom and dad.

Emilia and Stella made him Minecraft birthday cards. Carson really likes playing the minecraft demo on the PS3. Our elf on the shelf Zig-Zag and his cohort Cowey also had some birthday greetings for him.

Among his presents were a video walkie talkie radio and a crochet shark cocoon.

That evening we had dinner at Ihop and took Trax to temple square to see the lights and candy window decorations downtown.

Carson loves breakfast food for dinner, especially the pancakes Todd makes, which always contain a new secret ingredient.

On Saturday, he got to celebrate his birthday with friends at the Museum of Natural Curiosity - our new favorite hangout.

We got there right as they opened and had the whole place to ourselves. It was great!

A few of the kids had never been there so Carson got to show them some of his favorite things like the Rain Forest with hanging bridges and the green screen room where they can see themselves on camera.

There were several hands on demonstrations. My favorite was the one in their optical illusion area. There was a table set up with a lady showing the kids a science experiment. She had  two black blocks that looked identical and a bag of ice. She had the kids touch the blocks. The one to their left felt cold, the one to the right felt warm. She placed an ice cube on top of each of the two blocks.

The ice on the block to the left - the cold block - melted almost immediately. The other melted very slowly. She asked the kids why they thought the cold block would melt the ice so quickly. None had a really good answer. Then she proceeded to explain that the block on the left was made of aluminium while the one on the right was made of styrofoam. The aluminium block absorbs heat really quickly - that is why it felt cold to the touch and why it melted the ice so quickly. The styrofoam block acted as an insulator and maintained the temperature of the objects placed on it.

We ended the party with Spider man cupcakes that left everyone's lips red or blue.
