The cow jumped over the moon

Emilia chose to dressed up as the cow who jumped over the moon for her Kindergarten rhyme day. It took a lot more work than I had originally expected to get everything together but it was worth it.

She got to stand on a stage in front of her class and recite the rhyme with the help of her teacher Mrs. Epperson.

Hey diddle diddle rhyme

Hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon.
The little dog laughed to see such fun
And the dish ran away with the spoon!

That morning when I took Emilia to school I had a rude awakening as to how mean kids can be towards each other and how I won't always be there to protect my kids.

When I approached the waiting area outside Emilia's class there was another girl dressed up as Mary with her lamb. She was concerned because she was the only kid dressed up, and didn't want to stand out.  Her mom was next to her, trying to reassure her.

When she saw Emilia approach she pointed her finger at Emilia and begun laughing. Emilia, who had been beaming with excitement hoping to show everyone her costume turned to me with a frown and said 'Mommy, that girl is laughing at me!'

How I wish I could just go to that girl and give her a piece of my mind! Her mom, who was just standing next to her didn't say anything to the little brat. Other parents who were standing around tried to remedy the issue by complimenting Emilia on such an original costume.

I had a conversation with Emilia and reminded her that she had a gift for making other people smile and feel better about themselves. Since then, I've tried to point out that talent on other occasions.

It takes courage to stand out. I hope that she will continue to be who she is without worrying about what everyone else thinks.
