Kapa'a coast and Kuilau Trail

Our first hike in Kauai was the Kuilau trail. It's an easy 2.5 mile hike (RT) with great views of the center of the island. Our primary reason for going on this little trek was to see how the kids would handle walking long distances. There are many wonderful hikes in this island that we'd like to explore while we're here.

I didn't think Kapa'a had much to offer except for shopping. I was wrong! We rented some bikes and rode a 4 mile trail along the east shore and were surprised by its beauty. The rugged coast with black lava rock contrasted the white foam of the waves crashing against them making for a picture perfect shot every time.

The kids really enjoyed riding in the bike trailer and Todd got a good workout pulling them uphill. The bikes we rented were old school. You break by pedaling backwards. It took me a while to adjust to the change. I kept idling by pedalling back while coasting and would suddenly break. The handlebars were also super wide - for good posture? I kept wishing for my multi-gear mountain bike.
