Donkey Beach

Donkey Beach is a secluded beach near Kapa'a. It used to be known as a nude beach but the land around it now houses some beautiful mansions. The new land owners must have complained because it has become more family friendly.

The tall and strong waves close to shore make it a good surfing beach. We saw one person catching waves while we were there. It must also be a good place to catch fish because there were several men hiking to it with their fishing gear.

The big swell we have experienced over the last couple of weeks has brought a lot of trash to shore. Some clever person decided to create a dwelling on the sand by using some of the things found along the beach. He dug up a shelter and covered it with wood and leaves. He used water bottles and fishing net buoys to adorn it. There was even a Nora Roberts novel to read!

Emilia wanted to make the beach a little better also. So she picked up as much trash as her little arms could carry and took it to the closest bin. I was very proud of her.

Afterwards we went to Ono shaved ice in Kapa'a. The word ono means delicious in Hawaiian, and it truly was.

Shaved ice is a local treat made by shaving ice from a big block right as you order creating a fine powder that is then topped with whatever flavors you wish. You can choose to add a scoop of macadamia nut ice cream and other toppings to this delicious dessert.

The secret to a good shaved ice is a very sharp blade to shave the ice. I've had it on multiple occasions and this one was one of the best I've tasted.  My mouth is getting watery at the thought of one.
